The shift towards modular lighting can reduce plastic and electrical waste while creating more installation and maintenance opportunities for electricians. Gavin Tallentire, Senior Category Manager at CEF, explains how the company is working to bring modular products, as well as advice and support, to trade counters across the UK.
Until recently, many LED lighting products were designed as fixed, single-purpose fittings. If a component failed or functionality needed to change, the only option was to replace the whole product. As a result, large amounts of plastic and electrical components were wasted that, really, didn’t need to be.
Modular lighting offers a more flexible approach. By designing luminaires around interchangeable components, fittings can be configured for different applications, adapted when requirements change (for instance, when PIR dimming is needed) and maintained or repaired more easily over time.
For contractors, that means more practical options on site. For customers, it can mean less disruption, longer product life and less unnecessary waste.
The case for modularity
A bulkhead is a good example. In one setting, a contractor may need a standard fitting. In another, they may need to add a photocell for external use, so the light responds to natural daylight levels. In another application, they may need emergency functionality, or a different bezel or surround to suit the environment. With a modular approach, those options can be built around the same core product, rather than needing a completely separate fitting for every job.
Having that flexibility not only makes it more straightforward to select or specify products; it also supports better van stock management and can help contractors respond more quickly to customer requirements. If the right modules or components are available, there is greater potential to complete work on the first visit, rather than having to leave site, order a new fitting and extend the duration of the project.
It also creates a stronger maintenance opportunity. As integrated LED fittings have become more common, traditional lamp replacement work in commercial settings has reduced. Modular lighting starts to bring some of that service element back, because individual components, such as drivers, LED boards or emergency modules, can be replaced or upgraded without removing the whole luminaire. It even allows electricians to quickly change lighting functionality (for instance, from PIR to photocell sensors), which is especially useful on long-term maintenance contracts.
End user benefits
The benefits are just as important for end users. If a fitting has been installed for several years and one component fails, finding an exact like-for-like replacement can be difficult. Product ranges move on, dimensions change, and replacing a whole fitting can mean additional disruption, not to mention decorative repairs. With a modular product, the visible fitting can often remain in place while the failed component is changed.
There is also a clear environmental case to modular lighting. LED has helped the industry reduce energy consumption, but the next challenge is product lifecycle and waste. Too often, a complete fitting is removed and discarded when much of it is still perfectly serviceable. If the body, diffuser or housing remains fit for purpose, replacing one failed component is a more responsible approach than throwing away the whole luminaire.
Modularity can also support better end-of-life management. When products are designed so that components can be separated, plastics, electrical parts and other materials can be handled through more appropriate recycling routes, including WEEE processes where relevant.
Beyond the immediate installation
The important shift now is that modularity is becoming more accessible. Historically, it has been more common in project or specification ranges, where the cost base made it easier to justify. But modular thinking is now moving into more everyday, over-the-counter trade products. As more suppliers develop these ranges and costs continue to settle, modularity is set to become a much more familiar part of the lighting market.
CEF is supporting that shift as it develops. The market is still relatively early, but suppliers are moving in this direction and CEF is becoming an early adopter where the right products and solutions are available. CEF’s goal is to make modular products and components accessible quickly and recommended as much as possible at trade counters.
Modular lighting is about giving contractors a more practical way to meet different requirements, support customers over time and reduce the amount of usable material added to site waste. As more modular ranges become available, the opportunity is to think beyond the immediate installation. The right fitting can do the job today, but it can also be adapted, maintained and kept in service for longer. That is where modular lighting has the potential to make a real difference for contractors, customers and the wider industry.
