LCL low-carbon qualifications with strengthened entry requirements meet ECS approval

The ECS Steering Committee has confirmed continued recognition of low-carbon technology qualifications offered by LCL Awards. This follows the introduction of clearer, more robust entry requirements which are aligned to industry expectations.

The updated framework reinforces that these qualifications are intended for qualified and practising electricians, ensuring that low-carbon technologies – such as solar PV, electrical energy storage systems and EV charging – are designed and installed by operatives with the appropriate underpinning competence. Revised prerequisites now meet the EAS Qualifications Guide, Electrician Plus and JIB/ECS requirements, providing consistency across awarding organisations and schemes.

As the sector responds to net zero delivery, this supports employers, clients and regulators by maintaining a clear benchmark for competence. It also brings clarity for electricians that low-carbon upskilling sits on top of, not instead of, core occupational competence.

Financial support for these and other low-carbon qualifications is available through the JIB Skills Development Fund, enabling those working for JIB member companies to access a high standard of training and aid workforce progression.
