JTL apprentice through to the second round of WorldSkills UK competition

April 30, 2025

This year’s WorldSkills UK competition has officially begun, and JTL is thrilled to share the news that its apprentice Emily-Jane Simmons is off to a flying start, successfully passing the first round of the competition!

Emily, a second-year electrical apprentice, training with JTL at Focus Training Group in Bristol has been invited to Taunton College on Tuesday 10 June for the next round of the competition which will be a series of practical assessments testing the competitors’ technical skills. Entrants have to demonstrate their skills and knowledge through tasks inspired by real life industry scenarios; tested extensively on programming, fault finding/diagnosis, service, maintenance, and record keeping to name a few.

WorldSkills is designed by industry experts to help young people grow personally and professionally by developing their technical and employability skills.

The competition sees learners from all backgrounds and abilities demonstrate their readiness for high skilled jobs in sectors vital for the UK economy. Electrical skills are already in high demand and with the scale of infrastructure development and net zero ambitions in the UK, demand is set to increase.

Emily is being championed by her employer, Gloucestershire-based Melvin John Electrical Contracting Ltd, as well as her JTL Training Officer, Nigel Tippins who put her forward for the competition. Nigel sees huge potential Emily has to go far and be successful in the industry.

WorldSkills involves more than 80 countries and is a partnership between the education sector, businesses, and governments. It was set up over 60 years ago to help young people develop through competitions-based training, assessment, and benchmarking to support economic growth and create employment opportunities.
