Growth, opportunities and the skills crisis discussed at Fabian Society report launch

On 15 July 2026, Mike Reader, MP for Northampton South, hosted a launch and live discussion of the Fabian Society report, Building Skills: Tackling the built environment skills crisis, at the House of Commons. The Electrotechnical Joint Industry Board (JIB), Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) and JTL contributed to the report and supported the parliamentary launch event.

Joe Dromey, General Secretary of the Fabian Society, chaired a panel featuring Mike Reader MP; Andy Reakes, JIB Acting CEO; Nikki Davis, Principal and CEO at Leeds College of Building; and David Campbell, COO at the National House Building Council.

Panelists agreed on the importance of infrastructure in unlocking growth and opportunities as well as its vital role in addressing climate change challenges. They also welcomed Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s commitment to a council house-building programme but highlighted the need for clarity on funding and delivery.

There was in-depth discussion about the skills crisis, which touched on the work of the Construction Skills Mission Board, the Government’s investment in construction skills and the need for cross-departmental strategy.

Raising the importance of a job-outcomes approach, attracting and retaining apprentices and clear progression into industry resonated with attendees. Panelists stressed the importance of quality training and verified competence to maintain standards and safety.

Andy Reakes, Acting CEO at JIB, said:

“It is very encouraging to join representatives from industry, training and Government to engage in discussion on the issues raised in the Fabian Society’s report. We need to work together on solutions to meet the country’s infrastructure and building needs and ensure that competency standards and safety are paramount. We will continue to work with Government and represent the interests of JIB members and the wider electrotechnical sector including in recognition and support of those employers directly employing, taking on apprentices, and providing a good work standard.”
